SURFSUP

Alexander Wilson & Robin Reeder
Surfsup: A galleries skate-park
The idea came following a talk by artist Nils Norman, about relational aesthetics and in particular his writings about DIY adventure playgrounds.
Adventure playgrounds started mostly as small, community based explorations, which later grew to become substantial, politically driven entities that encouraged children to do build and envision their own playgrounds. The best account of adventure playground history is written by artist Nils Norman in his book An architecture of play: a survey of London’s adventure playgrounds.” - Article ‘Adventure Playgrounds / A Brief Guide: http://earlyfutures.com/?p=237’
We have incorporated the idea of relational aesthetics, referencing the community DIY playground. Installing the ramp in college for alternative interaction by student’s with-in the college institution, wishing to bring an aspect of play to the place of work. It also incorporates our shared interest in sub-cultures and fan-ism, in particular that of the 70’s Californian founding skateboarding scene.
The opening of the ramp within the gallery space prompted interest not only with those already familiar with the ‘sport’ of skateboarding, but those interested in the idea of the function in the sculptural qualities of the ramp.
Each individual who utilised the ramp for its proposed function or otherwise was required to sign a disclaimer, the disclaimer was to state that they were using the space in collaboration with the artists sharing our intent of exploration in an alternative environment. This was also documented performance, from which a video has been produced (included in the other DVD).
